Beijing, it’s been awhile, but I will finally be seeing you again this week. Not looking forward to the "toxic mist" or the 10-30 degree Fahrenheit weather (I’ve barely been surviving California’s high 40s), but am easing the pain by playing around with some winter-ready outfits on Polyvore. Also have been taking advantage of San Francisco’s shopping scene and will be returning with new purchases in tow, including a new camera. Unfortunately have not been able to track down the one investment piece I have been hankering after – sold out everywhere, despite the price tag. Any tips on where I can find one??

Shopping in Beijing: Gulou’s Best Boutiques

Gulou has long established itself as a shopping mecca – the “hipster” (read: younger, edgier and more affordable) alternative to Sanlitun and CBD’s luxury offerings. Since Nanluogu Xiang started marketing itself as “Beijing’s oldest hutong” and catering to tourists, all of the contiguous alleyways have benefited from the uptick in traffic. While NLGX has become oversaturated – no doubt a Starbucks opening is right around the corner – Gulou Dongdajie, Baochao, Wudaoying and Fangjia have begun drawing plentiful shops selling old and new (but mostly old) clothes, kitschy souvenirs, handmade jewelry and cutesy home accessories.
