Latest Obsession: Ume Studio

Meet my latest obsession, Ume Studio <3

Founded by two former architects Mei-Lan Tan and Victor Lefebvre, this Oakland-based interiors company just launched its first line of products. No two pieces are the same, from the stunning bowls to the Bouton soap dish (as shown above), all of which are hand-cast from high quality cement with natural pigments and texture.

In her email, Mei-Lan said the following about her and her partner’s motivation behind opening Ume Studio: “We are two former architects from Herzog & de Meuron who realized we were much more interested in the smaller things in life, details, craft, etc. that bring more ‘!’ moments to your day. Learning from our experience working in architectural firms, where product design relies on shape before technique, we believe that an object’s shape and use demands an understanding of its making. Our goal is not to design craft-centered items – but rather objects that exist by and for the hand that made them.”

In my opinion, we are blessed to have such talented local artisans in our community – and I can’t wait to stock my future dream home with as many of their light fixtures and bowls that I can afford, xx
