The District Happy Hour

For some reason I had never stepped foot into District until last month, and now (and I promise you I’m not being paid to say this), it is legit one of my favorite happy hour spots.

I usually favor the Mission or the Tenderloin when it comes to watering holes, but only in Soma can you find bars this huge, airy and gorgeous.

For those of you unfamiliar with District, it debuted as a wine bar 10+ years ago, before expanding to Oakland in 2012 serving whiskey and wine. As of a couple months ago, the owners have decided to introduce full bar service to its SF flagship location as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the cocktails we ordered – they were all thoughtfully balanced and tart, with stunning presentation – but I want to go back to sample the bourbon and rye flights. Still, as much as I love whiskey, I may have loved our server’s wine recommendations even more. District’s wine menu is spectacular, and the staff is knowledgeable and intuitive.

Given its roots as a wine bar, District’s house-made charcuterie and cheese boards were obviously impeccable.

But my friends and I were also crazy about several items on their happy hour menu (available Mon-Fri 4-6pm and Sat 5-7pm), including the delightfully creamy deviled eggs, crispy spiced chicken wings and $1 oysters.

Oh, and the guanciale pizza with cured pork cheek, chili sauce, onions, arugula and pecorino? Definitely worth the hype.
